As founding CEO of Umoja, Walter has a passion for community led conservation and managing wildlife outside protected areas to ensure the community benefits from wildlife on their land.
As Community Conservation Expert, who served Uganda Wildlife Authority for 25 years winning awards, Walter used his vast experience to establish conservancies in Uganda under Umoja’s flag since 2021. The conservancy approach to wildlife management empowers communities to secure land tenure, reduce threats to wildlife, and diversify the sources of income through tourism. Walter introduced community wildlife scouts activities in Uganda and trained 850 scouts to mitigate human-wildlife conflict. He earlier worked with Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH) as Coordinator for Human-Wildlife Conflict under Biodiversity for Resilience project. Currently, Walter and his team in Umoja are supporting conservancies to develop tourism products including technical capacity to access partners support for livelihood improvement.
Walter holds a Master of Business Administration, a Bachelors of Peacebuilding and Conflict Resolution with certificates in Wildlife Management form various colleges in the world.
